Alfonso XIII. or The Beach Bridge

Plaiko Zubixe

The bridge or runway known as «Plaiko zubixe » (beach bridge), is a lovely sample of what was known as “iron architecture” at the turn of the 20th century. It was built in 1927, financed by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, to give pedestrian access to Arrigorri Beach. Its iron structure was supported by two limestone pivots. The bridge could turn on one of the pivots to open up and give way to big ships.

Until 1970, those who crossed the bridge had to pay a toll. The bridge became known popularly as the “Perra Chica Bridge” because the first toll was a 5 cent coin nicknamed a “perra chica”.
